A strategic appointment
In March 2017, the ISCAST Board appointed Rev. Dr Chris Mulherin as ISCAST's first executive director, working three days per week. Previously, Chris worked one or two days a week as executive officer. Since his first appointment, Chris has brought direction and focus, and developed new ventures so that ISCAST might achieve its goals.
The Executive Director’s role is
- to encourage the ISCAST network around Australia through visits and other contact,
- to promote engagement with the wider community through contributions to public discussion on matters of science and Christianity, and
- to establish relationships with organisations that have an interest in the conversation between science, faith, and culture.
Rev. Dr Chris Mulherin is an Anglican minister with a background in engineering, philosophy, and theology. Chris's doctorate in philosophical theology and philosophy of science dealt with the relationship between scientific and other knowledge claims such as those of theology.
Prior to starting as the ISCAST executive director, Chris spent a year as locum vicar of St Jude's Anglican Church in Carlton. In the more distant past, Chris has worked for Scripture Union, taught engineering, philosophy, and theology, and spent 13 years in Argentina as a missionary with his wife Lindy and their five boys. In Argentina, Chris worked for the national student Christian group and pastored a church in the northwestern city of Tucumán.
Chris has published articles and book chapters in the media and in academic works. He has also produced ABC Radio National programs, and he blogged on the Global Atheist Convention for ABC RN. When he is not working for ISCAST, he teaches and tutors at various universities in Melbourne in philosophy, history of science, Christian apologetics, and climate change.
Chris can be contacted on 0431 330 380 or at ChrisMulherin@ISCAST.org. He welcomes your opinions and suggestions.
Supporting the Executive Director
The budget for the ED position is $90,000, which includes salary, travel costs, and other expenses. Our hope is that we will soon have funding for a full-time ED. Please consider supporting an ED into the future as ISCAST plays a more significant role in public engagement about the relevance of Christian faith for an increasingly secular and technoscientific culture.
